Reincarnation is the transmigration of the soul from one body to another, at the endpoint of the old life and the beginning of the new one. Many cultures believe in some version of this. In some religious traditions, upon the point of death, the soul is measured, and if it has not reached the intended milestones, it is returned to the physical plane in a new form. Some religions believe that every reincarnation returns the soul to another human body, while others believe souls can be reincarnated into animals or even inanimate objects. Even the ancient Egyptians, who did not explicitly believe in reincarnation, placed "ka statues" in the tombs of the dead so that if the body was violated, the soul would have a place to reside.

The age of a soul is said to be related to one's progress to spiritual perfection, be it nirvana or some other state, depending on the culture. While most people will require many reincarnations to reach the plateau of enlightenment, this need not be always the case.
